Student Task

This worksheet works well as the "production" stage of a lesson, after students have already practised naming and shading fractions and finding fractions of groups. Students can work through Activities 1-3 independently or in pairs. For the bonus challenge, have students write their own problem individually, then physically trade papers with a partner to solve — circulate while they do this to catch any problems that are unclear or don't have a sensible whole-number answer before pairs mark each other's work. Collect or review Activity 3's written explanations to check reasoning, not just final answers.

Classroom Use

Turn the bonus challenge into a small gallery walk: once pairs have solved each other's problems, post a few finished problem-and-solution pairs around the room and have students walk around checking whether they agree with the shared answers, discussing any they think are wrong.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Read each story problem aloud before students begin, provide a simple sentence frame for Activity 3 ("___ shared equally among ___ is ___ each, so the answer is ___"), and allow the bonus challenge problem to be told aloud to a scribe if writing independently is still difficult.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all three activities and the bonus challenge as written, working through Activity 3 with the working and answer lines provided.
CHALLENGE: For the bonus challenge, ask advanced students to write a problem involving a fraction with more than one part (like 3/4) rather than a simple 1-part share, then check that their partner's solution correctly handles the extra step.

Answer Key & Assessment

Use Activity 3's written explanations and the bonus challenge's original problem as evidence for the Grading Rubric's Problem Solving criterion, and use Activities 1 and 2 as quicker checks of notation and group-fraction fluency.
