Overview

This worksheet covers the core skill of moving between a shaded picture and its fraction from four different angles, so that a student who has only memorised one direction (say, naming a fraction from a picture) is pushed to also work the other way around (shading a picture to match a fraction). Activity 1 has students count shaded and total parts and write the fraction. Activity 2 gives blank shapes and a target fraction for the student to shade themselves. Activity 3 is a matching task between four lettered shapes and a list of fractions. Activity 4 is a fill-in-the-blank table connecting shaded parts, total parts, and fraction notation, with some values missing in each row. A bonus challenge invites students to design and label their own shape split into more than four equal parts.

Use this worksheet for independent practice after the Understanding Fractions PowerPoint and some guided board practice, or as homework once the concept has been introduced in class. Students can work through it independently; Activity 2 (shading to match a fraction) works well checked in pairs, since students can compare which parts they chose to shade and confirm both are valid ways to show the same fraction. Review as a class or collect for grading, using the answer key — for Activity 2, remind students that any matching number of equal parts is correct, since which specific parts are shaded doesn't change the fraction.

Classroom Use

Turn Activity 3 into a quick partner race: give pairs a fresh set of four lettered shapes and a list of fractions on the board, and see which pair can correctly match all four fastest, then have the winning pair explain their reasoning to the class.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a shaded example fraction card students can hold up to compare against as they complete Activity 2, and allow students to describe fractions verbally in their first language to a peer or aide before writing the English notation.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four activities and the bonus challenge in the order given.
CHALLENGE: For the bonus challenge, ask advanced students to also write a word problem that matches the fraction they shaded, connecting the drawing back to a real-world context.
