Grade 6 ESL Test: Daily Life — Paper and Speaking Check (30 Marks)

Question Types & Suggested Use

Paper 20 marks (listening 4, reading 4, grammar 6, writing 6 with a 3-part marking guide) + speaking 10 marks = 30. Bands: 27–30 Excellent, 21–26 Good, 15–20 Developing, 0–14 Needs Practice.

Skills Assessed

• Name and write 16 daily routines and chores with the correct verb: wake up, take a shower, brush my teeth, get dressed, have breakfast, catch the bus, do my homework, go to bed, make my bed, sweep the floor, do the dishes, do the laundry, take out the trash, water the plants, cook dinner, go to the market.
• Use at, in and on correctly with clock times, parts of the day and days (at 6:30, in the evening, on Saturdays).
• Describe someone's routine with he / she + -s / -es (He catches the bus at 7:00.).
• Put events in order with First, Then, After that and Finally.
• Choose the present simple for routines and the present continuous for actions happening now ("I usually walk to school, but today I'm taking the bus.").
• Read a 180-word text about a daily routine, answer questions, and write a 60–80-word paragraph about their own weekday.

How to Administer

• Read the listening script (on the answer key) two times at a slow, natural speed for Part A. While the class does Parts B–D, call students one at a time for the Speaking Check (page 3). Record all scores on the class record.

Differentiation

Support: Teach the 8 routines in Lesson 1 and add the 8 chores in Lesson 2. Give a printed word bank and the Time Cards for Worksheet Parts C and E. For writing, give a frame: "On weekdays, I wake up at ___. First, I ___. Then I ___. After that, I ___. Finally, I ___." Pair a stronger student with a weaker one for the information gap.

Extension: Add frequency words (always, usually, sometimes, never) and "but today …" sentences. Strong students write a second paragraph comparing a weekday and a Sunday, or interview a teacher and report back ("Ms. Lee gets up at 5:30!").

Follow-Up Activities

• Use the Speaking Check prompts as a practice pair activity the lesson before.
• Return the writing (Part D) with one "next step" from the Grading Rubric.

Teacher Tips

Most of your students' first languages (Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Khmer, Lao, Malay / Indonesian) do not change the verb for he / she and have no tense endings. So you will hear "He go to school at 7", "I am wake up at 6" and "Every day I am doing my homework." Do not stop students to correct every error. Write a big "-s" on the board and tap it when you recast: "Yes — he goes to school at 7." Use the same two hand gestures in every lesson: a circling hand for "every day" and a finger pointing down for "right now". After a few lessons, students start to correct themselves when they see the gesture.
