This summative quiz combines all four skill areas taught in Unit 1 into one formal assessment: 8 points of vocabulary, 12 points of mixed grammar, 6 points of reading comprehension (using a new original passage — an email from a fictional pen pal — distinct from the Reading Activity's passage), and 4 points of short guided writing scored against an included scoring guide. Point values are labeled on every section so students can pace themselves during the quiz.

Grade 6 45-55 Minutes Quiz Assessment

Question Types & Suggested Use

Resource is itself the unit's summative assessment (30 points total). Score Sections 1–3 against the answer key exactly; score Section 4 using the four-level scoring guide this provided (0–4 points based on inclusion of required details and grammatical accuracy).

Skills Assessed

Correctly use at least 6 of 8 core vocabulary words in context.
Correctly apply at least 9 of 12 mixed grammar points ("to be," pronouns, possessives, wh- questions, articles).
Correctly answer at least 4 of 6 reading-comprehension items about a new, previously unseen passage.
Write a coherent 4–6 sentence response including all three required personal details, scoring at least 3 of 4 points on the writing scoring guide.

How to Administer

Administer during Lesson 5, immediately after the Review Worksheet (Resource 9), under normal test conditions (see the Lesson Plan, Resource 11). Allow approximately 25 minutes for the full quiz.

Differentiation

Support: Support students may be given up to 10 additional minutes and may keep a copy of the "To Be" verb table (from Resource 2) visible during the quiz, per school accommodation policy.

On-Level: Complete the quiz within the standard 25-minute period under normal test conditions.

Challenge: No modification needed; Challenge students who finish early may quietly reread and revise their Section 4 writing response.

Follow-Up Activities

This is a formal assessment and is not intended as a classroom activity in itself; however, once quizzes are returned, consider a whole-class "most common mistake" review where you present the two or three most frequent errors (anonymized) and have students correct them together.

Teacher Tips

Read the writing section's scoring guide to the class before they begin the quiz (not just before grading) — knowing in advance that full credit requires all three specific details (full name, hometown, and one interesting fact) measurably improves how completely students answer that section, rather than discovering the requirement only when their work is returned.
