About This Resource

An 8-slide presentation that introduces the twelve town-map places, prepositions of place, and direction-giving phrases used throughout this topic, then walks students through a modelled route and sets up the paired speaking activity. Built for teacher-led presentation at the front of the room, with the same town map used in every other resource in this topic.

Overview

The presentation opens with a title slide and clear learning objectives, then introduces the shared town map and its twelve places. From there it teaches prepositions of place with example sentences tied directly to the map, then giving-directions phrases with icon-supported cards. A dedicated "Let's Follow a Route" slide models a complete, correctly ordered set of directions from the bus station to the library — the same kind of thinking-aloud modelling a teacher would do live, but on-screen for the whole class to see. The final two slides set up the Map Information Gap Speaking Activity and close with three open review questions.

Grade 7 45-55 Minutes Vocabulary Places in My Town

Lesson Sequence

Present slides 1–4 during Session 1 to introduce places and prepositions of place, using the map to ask follow-up "where is...?" questions. Use slides 5–7 in Session 2 to teach direction phrases, model a full route, and launch the Map Information Gap Speaking Activity (distribute the Map A / Map B handouts right after slide 7). Slide 8 works well as a warm-up review at the start of Session 3 or as a closing check at the end of Session 2.

Classroom Activities

After the review slide, have students stand up and physically act out one of the direction phrases (turning, going straight, crossing) as you call it out, as a quick kinaesthetic break before writing or quiz work.

Teacher Tips

On the "Let's Follow a Route" slide, cover the numbered steps and reveal them one at a time (or read them aloud one at a time) rather than showing all six at once — this keeps students focused on one instruction before moving to the next, which mirrors how they will need to process spoken directions in real conversation.

Learning Objectives

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Leave the map visible throughout the lesson so students can point rather than only speak when answering questions; pre-teach the twelve place names before the lesson for students who need extra exposure.
ON-LEVEL: Follow the presentation as designed, answering questions in full sentences.
CHALLENGE: Ask these students to generate their own "Try it" style question for a partner using a different pair of places on the map.

Assessment

Use the "Try it" prompt on the prepositions slide and the three review questions on the final slide as quick oral checks for understanding before moving into independent or paired work.
