Grade 9 Identity Vocabulary Worksheet (with Answer Key)

About This Resource

A 2-page worksheet that practices all 12 personality-trait words through definitions, sentence completion, a synonym/antonym table, a personal-writing challenge, and a word search — with a full answer key.

Overview

This worksheet gives students several ways to practice the same 12 trait words: matching definitions to words, completing example sentences, filling in a synonym/antonym table, writing three original sentences describing themselves, and finding six trait words in a word search. The mix of receptive and productive practice helps the vocabulary stick before students move to the more abstract Identity Wheel Worksheet.

Grade 9 45-55 Minutes Vocabulary

Student Task

  • Use after the Vocabulary PowerPoint's trait slides. Complete Part A together as a class the first time, then let students finish Parts B and C independently. The Challenge and Bonus sections work well as homework or an exit ticket.

Classroom Use

  • After finishing, have students stand and find a classmate who shares one trait word they wrote about themselves in the Challenge section.

Differentiation

Support: Keep the Word Bank visible for every part, and allow students to work with a partner on the synonym/antonym table.
On-Level: Students complete the worksheet as designed, moving from definitions to independent writing.
Challenge: Ask early finishers to write one original riddle for a trait word not yet used and trade with a partner to solve.

Answer Key & Assessment

Collect Parts A-C as a quick written check of vocabulary recall. Use the Challenge writing as an informal check that students can apply trait words to themselves in complete sentences.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to match 12 personality-trait words to their definitions.
  • Students will be able to complete a sentence with the correct trait word.
  • Students will be able to identify a synonym and an antonym for a given trait.

Teacher Tips

Read the Part A definitions aloud as a class before students answer independently — several traits (empathetic, disciplined) are new academic vocabulary for most Grade 9 English learners.
