Give Up or Keep On? Everyday Phrasal Verbs

About This Resource

A complete Grade 9 ESL lesson pack on common phrasal verbs: what a phrasal verb is, meanings that differ from the main verb, separable and inseparable phrasal verbs, object pronoun position, phrasal verbs for daily routines, school and relationships, and using them in natural conversation. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that a phrasal verb is a verb plus a particle (such as up, off or out) that often has a new meaning: give up means stop trying, not give. They learn high-frequency phrasal verbs grouped by theme, practise separable verbs (turn the music down / turn it down) and inseparable verbs (look after the baby), use context to work out meaning, read a short dialogue and replace formal verbs with natural phrasal verbs in their own writing.

Grade 9 ESL (ages 14–15), B1–B2 60 minutes Vocabulary grammar reading speaking writing

Learning Objectives

  • Understand and use high-frequency phrasal verbs in context.
  • Distinguish separable and inseparable phrasal verbs and place object pronouns correctly.
  • Use context clues to work out the meaning of unfamiliar phrasal verbs.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and act out a few phrasal verbs (stand up, sit down, turn on the light).
  • Use the flashcards for matching and memory games, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Phrasal verb charades: students act out a phrasal verb and the class guesses it.
  • Formal to friendly: rewrite formal sentences (The meeting was postponed) with phrasal verbs (The meeting was put off).
  • Story chain: each student adds a sentence to a story using a new phrasal verb from the flashcards.

Differentiation

Support: start with literal phrasal verbs (stand up, sit down) before idiomatic ones (give up). Challenge: write a dialogue that uses eight phrasal verbs naturally, including separable ones with pronouns.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check meaning and word order (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the dialogue writing.

Teacher Tips

Teach phrasal verbs in themed groups and in full sentences, not as long lists. Students remember a verb better when they see it in a situation they know.
