How Many Are There? — Counting Activity

Student Task

• Look carefully at each group of objects on page 2.
• Count the objects one by one, out loud if possible, and write the number in the box.
• On page 3, count each group and circle the number that matches.
• Check work with the answer key on page 4.

Classroom Use

• Before starting the worksheet, scatter a small pile of classroom counters or blocks on each table and have partners take turns counting a handful aloud to each other as a warm-up.

Differentiation

Support: limit the Count and Write page to the first five items (counts up to 10) for a first attempt, or provide physical counters to move alongside the pictures.

Extension: have students write the number word, not just the numeral, beside each Count and Write answer.

Answer Key & Assessment

Check the completed pages against the answer key; this is a hands-on formative check of counting accuracy rather than a formal written quiz.

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to count a group of up to 20 objects accurately and record or identify the matching numeral.

Teacher Tips

Encourage students to touch or point to each object as they count rather than counting by sight alone — physical one-to-one correspondence is what prevents the double-counting and skipping errors that are common at this age, especially once groups pass ten objects.
