Numbers 1-20 — Vocabulary Flashcards

How to Present

• Cut out the cards along the dashed lines.
• Use the picture cards to teach counting and number recognition from 1 to 20.
• Mix picture and word cards for a matching game.
• Hold up a card and ask, "How many? What number is it?" — students answer!

Games & Speaking Activities

• Lay the 1-10 picture cards face-up around the room. Call out a number, and have students race to touch or stand next to the matching card.

Teacher Tips

Introduce numbers in small batches of 5 at a time (1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20) rather than all 20 at once — Grade 1 students retain new number vocabulary far better with a short, repeated set than with a long list introduced in a single sitting.

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to recognize and name numbers 1-20 when shown a counted group of objects or a numeral.

Differentiation

Support: start with only numbers 1-5 before introducing the full 1-20 set.

Extension: have students sort the picture cards into groups of even and odd numbers before the formal Counting Activity (Resource 4) is introduced.

Assessment

Informal — observe whether students can correctly count and name each number when a card is held up, and whether they can find the matching word card during a review game.
