Numbers — Matching Activity

About This Resource

A two-page worksheet, split into Part 1 (1-10) and Part 2 (11-20), where students match 20 numbered counted-object pictures to their number words in a scrambled word bank, plus a full answer key.

Overview

Each part lays out 10 counted-object pictures in a numbered 5-column grid with an empty letter box beside each one. A scrambled, letter-labeled word bank below gives students that part's 10 number words in random order, so they must count and read rather than simply copy in sequence. Splitting the full 1-20 range across two pages keeps each part a manageable size for independent work.

Grade 1 35-45 Minutes Numbers

Student Task

  • Review the number words as a class before handing out the worksheet.
  • Have students count the objects in each picture and find the matching word in the Word Bank.
  • Students write the matching letter in the box beside each picture.
  • Grade using the included answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Turn Part 1 into a live game first: hold up each picture card from Resource 1 and have students call out the matching letter from a word bank written on the board, before they complete the individual worksheet.

Differentiation

Support: complete only Part 1 (1-10) for a first attempt, saving Part 2 for a later lesson, or read each word bank option aloud before students begin.

Extension: have students write a full sentence ("There are seven.") next to each completed match instead of just the letter.

Answer Key & Assessment

Grade using the included answer key; use results to see which numbers still need more counting-supported practice before moving to Resource 5 (Grammar Worksheet).

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to match a counted group of objects to its correct number word by counting and reading independently.

Teacher Tips

Have students complete Part 1 (1-10) in full before attempting Part 2 (11-20) — mastering the smaller numbers first makes the teen numbers noticeably easier to count and match.
