Join It Up! Using Conjunctions

About This Resource

A free Grade 6 ESL grammar worksheet pack on conjunctions: coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, so), subordinating conjunctions (because, although, when, if, until), commas in compound sentences, joining short sentences and writing longer, clearer sentences. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that conjunctions join words, phrases and sentences. They use and to add, but and although to contrast, or to give a choice, so and because to show cause and effect, and when, if and until to talk about time and conditions. They choose the right conjunction, join pairs of short sentences, place commas correctly and improve a choppy paragraph.

Student Task

  • Write two short sentences on the board and ask students to join them in different ways.
  • Teach the meanings of the conjunctions, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 5; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Sentence builder: give pairs two sentence strips and a conjunction card; they join them and read the result aloud.
  • Finish my sentence: say "I was tired, so …" and students complete it.
  • Conjunction relay: teams race to join sentence pairs on the board with the best conjunction.

Differentiation

Support: focus on and, but and because with sentence strips. Challenge: start sentences with although or when and use the comma correctly.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 to 4 check choosing and using conjunctions (answer key included). Activity 5 checks combining sentences in writing.

Learning Objectives

  • Use coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, so) to join sentences.
  • Use subordinating conjunctions such as because, although, when and if.
  • Combine short sentences into longer, clearer sentences with correct commas.
