Kindergarten ESL Lesson Plan: All About Me (Family, Feelings and Body Parts)
About This Resource
A complete two-session lesson plan for introducing "All About Me" vocabulary to Kindergarten ESL students — family words, feelings, and body parts. It's built for young English learners, so almost everything is spoken, pointed at, and acted out before children are asked to write or draw anything. Teachers get a full minute-by-minute sequence, a vocabulary list, and differentiation ideas they can use with the matching flashcards, PowerPoint, and worksheets in this topic.
Overview
This lesson plan guides a teacher through two short sessions built around the same set of vocabulary: family members in Session 1, and body parts and feelings in Session 2. Each session opens with a greeting or check-in routine, moves into a picture-supported vocabulary introduction, gives children a chance to practise with teacher support, and ends with an independent worksheet task and a short review. The plan tells the teacher exactly what to say and do at each stage, and what the children should be doing in response, so it can be picked up and taught with very little extra preparation.

Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify and say family words (Mom, Dad, sister, brother, baby, grandma, grandpa) when shown a picture.
- Students will be able to point to and name basic body parts (head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, feet).
- Students will be able to express a feeling (happy, sad, excited, tired) using a picture or a one-word answer.
- Students will be able to complete the sentence frame "I am ___" or "This is my ___" with support.
Lesson Procedure
- Read through both session sequences before teaching, and gather the materials listed (the All About Me flashcards, Vocabulary PowerPoint, This Is Me worksheet, My Family worksheet, and Ask Your Friend! speaking sheet all pair with this plan). Session 1 and Session 2 can be taught on separate days or combined into one longer lesson with a movement break in between. Follow the Time / Stage / Teacher Does / Students Do table left to right — it's designed to be glanced at while teaching, not read aloud.
Assessment
Use the accompanying All About Me Grading Rubric to record observations during the guided and independent practice stages of both sessions — this plan is built to feed directly into that rubric.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Pair students who need extra help with a peer who can model the target word or translate briefly; reduce independent worksheet items and lean on pointing and speaking instead of writing; keep flashcards visible as a picture word bank throughout.
ON-LEVEL: Complete all worksheet activities and the pair speaking sheet using the modelled sentence frames.
CHALLENGE: Encourage a full sentence instead of a one-word answer ("I am happy today" instead of "happy"); ask the student to introduce a family member to the class using two describing words.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Turn the closing review into a movement game: call out a family, feeling, or body-part word and have children act it out (point to the body part, make the feeling face, or mime rocking a "baby") instead of just saying it back.
Teacher Tips
Keep a set of the flashcards taped to the board throughout both sessions, even during independent work — Kindergarten children often just need a quick glance at a picture to retrieve a word they already know, rather than a full re-teach.
