Kindergarten ESL Lesson Plan: Greetings and Introductions — Hello! What's Your Name?

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to:
• Say Hello / Hi and Goodbye / Bye-bye at the right time.
• Choose Good morning, Good afternoon or Good night from a picture of the time of day.
• Answer "What's your name?" with "My name is ___." and ask a friend.
• Answer "How are you?" with "I'm fine, thank you." or "I'm happy / sad / tired."
• Say "Nice to meet you!" when they meet someone new.
• Trace Hello, Hi and Bye on the lines and write their own name.

Lesson Procedure

• Read both lessons before class. Each stage has a time, what the teacher does and what the children do. Lesson 1 covers Hello / Goodbye and names; Lesson 2 covers times of day, How are you? and Nice to meet you. An optional third lesson is for review and assessment. Assessment

Watch and listen during Name Ball and the Let's Talk! role play and score with the Grading Rubric. The plan also shows where to use the Quick Quiz and the Test.

Differentiation

Support: Use an action with every phrase, every time. Accept one-word answers first ("Mina.", "Happy.") and then model the full sentence for the child to repeat. Give each child a name card to copy. Pair a shy child with a confident buddy for the role play. Write the tracing words in yellow highlighter for children who need more help.

Extension: Teach "Good evening!" and "See you tomorrow!". Ask "How old are you?" – "I'm five." Let confident children lead the Hello Chant or play the teacher in Name Ball. Ask them to introduce a friend: "This is Ben."

Classroom Activity Ideas

• Name Ball: roll a soft ball and ask "What's your name?" Each child answers, then asks a friend.
• Hello–Goodbye Walk: play music; when it stops, greet a partner, ask their name, then say goodbye.

Teacher Tips

Listen for the end sounds. Many children in Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia drop the last sound, so "name" becomes "nay", "fine" becomes "fai" and "nice" becomes "nai". Say the word slowly and close your hand as you finish the sound ("na-m-e"). Children copy the hand and the sound, and the end sounds quickly come back.
