Letter & Picture Matching Worksheet

About This Resource

A two-part, 26-item worksheet (Part 1: A-M, Part 2: N-Z) where students match a shuffled row of pictures to the correct beginning letter, with a full answer key.

Overview

This is the unit's independent-practice worksheet for letter-sound matching. Each part presents 13 shuffled pictures for students to label with their correct beginning letter, using a simple Letter Bank of reference letters underneath. Splitting the alphabet across two pages keeps each page's picture grid readable at this age, and lets a teacher assign Part 1 and Part 2 on different days if a class hasn't yet covered the full alphabet.

Grade 1 35-45 Minutes Letter Recognition

Student Task

  • Assign Part 1 (A-M) once those letters have been introduced, and Part 2 (N-Z) once the rest have been covered.
  • Have students say each picture's name aloud before writing a letter, to reinforce the sound-to-letter connection.
  • Students write the matching letter in the box under each picture, using the Letter Bank as a reference.
  • Grade using the included answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Turn it into a partner check: after finishing independently, students trade papers and read each other's answers aloud before checking against the class answer key together.

Differentiation

Support: complete Part 1 only, or allow students to work in pairs and discuss each picture before writing.

Extension: have students write one additional word (not shown) that starts with each letter, in the margin.

Answer Key & Assessment

Grade using the included answer key; use results to identify which letters or sounds individual students still need more practice with before moving further into the unit.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify the beginning letter of a picture's name and match spoken sounds to their written letter.

Teacher Tips

Encourage students to work through the pictures in order rather than jumping around — saying each word slowly and listening for the first sound is a skill in itself, and skipping around can mask a student who's actually guessing rather than sounding out.

What's Included

  • 1 DOCX file (editable, 2 pages) and matching PDF
  • 1 DOCX answer key and matching PDF
