Alphabet Flashcards A-Z

About This Resource

A 4-page, print-and-cut flashcard set covering all 26 letters, each card showing the uppercase and lowercase letter together with a picture and its example word.

Overview

This is the foundation resource for the whole Phonics unit. Every card follows the same format — a big "Aa" style letter, a matching picture, and the example word — so students immediately connect the letter's shape, its sound, and a concrete image. Because 26 letters is a much bigger set than a typical 6-10 word vocabulary unit, the cards are laid out across three grid pages (nine cards per page) rather than one, following the cover page's usage instructions.

Grade 1 40-55 Minutes Alphabet

How to Present

  • Print and cut out the cards along the dashed lines.
  • Hold up a card and say the routine out loud: the letter name, then its sound, then the word ("A, /a/, apple").
  • Use the cards for daily letter-recognition drills, sound games, and A-Z ordering practice.
  • Sort cards into "known" and "still learning" piles to track individual student progress over the unit.

Games & Speaking Activities

  • Lay 8-10 cards face-up on the floor or a table. Call out a letter sound (not the name) and have a student race to slap or point to the matching card.

Teacher Tips

Don't try to introduce all 26 cards at once — pull out only the 2-3 cards for the current week's letters (see the Teacher's Guide's suggested pacing) and add previously-taught cards back in gradually for cumulative review.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name each letter of the alphabet, uppercase and lowercase.
  • Students will be able to produce each letter's primary sound.
  • Students will be able to connect each letter to a picture whose name begins with that sound.

Differentiation

Support: focus drills on a small rotating set of 4-6 cards at a time rather than all 26.

Extension: have students sort the full deck into alphabetical order independently as a timed challenge.

What's Included

  • 1 PDF file (4 pages: 1 cover/instructions page + 3 pages of 3x3 letter card grids)
