Monday to Sunday: Days of the Week

About This Resource

A complete Grade 1 ESL pack on the days of the week: saying and spelling the seven days, putting them in order, today, tomorrow and yesterday, weekdays and the weekend, and talking about what we do each day. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn the seven days of the week with a song, flashcards and a class calendar. They put the days in order, learn that every day starts with a capital letter, use today, tomorrow and yesterday ("Today is Monday. Tomorrow is Tuesday."), sort weekdays and the weekend, and talk about what they do on different days.

Learning Objectives

  • Say, read and order the seven days of the week.
  • Use today, tomorrow and yesterday with days of the week.
  • Talk about what they do on different days of the week.

How to Use This Resource

  • Sing a days of the week song together while pointing to the flashcards in order.
  • Teach today, tomorrow and yesterday with the class calendar and slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the my week homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Human week: seven children hold day cards and the class puts them in order.
  • What's missing? Hide one day card and children say which day is missing.
  • Calendar helper: each morning a child says "Today is …, tomorrow is …, yesterday was …."

Differentiation

Support: focus on saying the days in order with the song before reading and writing. Challenge: children write a sentence for each day about what they do.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check order and vocabulary. Use the rubric for the my week writing in activity 6.
