My Pet and Me: Pets and Pet Care

About This Resource

A complete Grade 1 ESL lesson pack on pets and pet care: pet words (dog, cat, fish, bird, rabbit, hamster, turtle), what pets need (food, water, a home, exercise, love), the verbs feed, walk, brush and clean, saying I have a... and It can..., and reading about a girl and her rabbit. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, picture flashcards, a six-activity worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn the names of common pets and what each pet needs to be healthy and happy. They practise pet-care verbs (feed, give water, walk, brush, clean), describe pets with simple sentences (I have a cat. It is small. It can jump.), match pets to their homes, read a short story about a girl who looks after her rabbit and finish by drawing and writing about a real or dream pet.

Learning Objectives

  • Say and recognize the names of seven common pets.
  • Name things pets need and the actions we do to care for them.
  • Describe a pet with I have a... It is... It can...

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: make a dog sound and ask "What pet is this?" Teach the pet words with the flashcards.
  • Teach what pets need and the pet-care verbs, then do worksheet activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6. Use the quiz to check and send the homework home. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Pet sounds: the teacher makes a pet sound and students hold up the matching flashcard.
  • Pet care mime: a student mimes feeding, walking or brushing a pet and the class guesses the action.
  • Class pet survey: students ask "Do you have a pet?" and make a tally chart of the class's pets.

Differentiation

Support: use picture flashcards and give sentence frames (I have a ___. It is ___.). Challenge: ask students to write three sentences about a pet, including what it eats and how they care for it.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check pet words and pet care (answer key included). Use the rubric to check the description in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Some children do not have pets, so always offer "my dream pet" as an option. Teach that pets are living things that need care every day, just like people.
