What Do You Say Back? — Conversation Match-Up

Student Task

• Cut out the 8 response cards on page 3.
• Read each greeting or question on the mat on page 2.
• Find the response that would naturally come next.
• Glue each response card into the box beside its match, then check work with the answer key on page 4.

Classroom Use

• Give eight students each one response card and have them find and stand beside the classmate holding the matching prompt card, then read their pair aloud to the class.

Differentiation

Support: pre-cut the cards and reduce the task to the four simplest pairs (hello/hello, goodbye/goodbye, good morning/good morning, good night/good night) for a first attempt.

Extension: have students write one additional line of dialogue that could come after each matched pair.

Answer Key & Assessment

Check the completed, glued mat against the answer key; this is a hands-on formative check of conversational vocabulary rather than a formal written quiz.

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to identify and produce the natural spoken response to a common greeting or question, not just recognize the greeting itself.

Teacher Tips

Say each prompt-and-response pair aloud together as a class before handing out the cut-out cards — a couple of pairs (like "Nice to meet you!") genuinely have more than one good response, so it helps to agree on one shared answer together first, the same way the Sequencing-style activities in other units benefit from a group walkthrough before independent work.
