Rock Detectives: Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic Rocks

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 science lesson pack on the three types of rock: how igneous rocks form from cooled magma or lava, how sedimentary rocks form in layers, how heat and pressure make metamorphic rocks, common examples, the rock cycle and identifying rocks by their features. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students become rock detectives. They learn that igneous rocks form when melted rock cools (granite, basalt, pumice), sedimentary rocks form when layers of sediment are pressed and cemented together (sandstone, limestone, shale), and metamorphic rocks form when heat and pressure change other rocks (marble, slate). They match rocks to how they formed, read about the rock cycle, sort examples and use clues such as crystals, layers and fossils to identify rocks.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 55 minutes Earth science classifying observing reading explaining

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks form.
  • Classify common rocks using their features and how they formed.
  • Explain the rock cycle and how one type of rock can change into another.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and pass around rock samples or photos.
  • Use the flashcards to teach the key words, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the rock hunt homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Rock sort: students examine real rock samples with magnifying glasses and sort them by crystals, layers or bands.
  • Crayon rock cycle: shave crayons (sediment), press them (sedimentary), warm and press them (metamorphic) and melt them (igneous) with adult help.
  • Sandwich rocks: layer bread and fillings to model sedimentary layers, then press to show compaction.

Differentiation

Support: use picture cards with the three clue words and two examples of each rock type. Challenge: explain a full journey around the rock cycle for one piece of rock.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check rock types and formation (answer keys included). Use the rubric for explanations and the rock hunt.

Teacher Tips

Give each rock type a clue word: igneous = fire (crystals or bubbles), sedimentary = layers (and sometimes fossils), metamorphic = changed (bands or shiny layers).
