Our Protective Blanket: Earth's Atmosphere

About This Resource

A complete Grade 6 science lesson pack on Earth's atmosphere: the gases in air, the five layers (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere), the ozone layer, air pressure and altitude, the greenhouse effect and why the atmosphere makes life possible. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students explore the layer of gases that surrounds Earth. They learn that air is mostly nitrogen and oxygen, put the five layers of the atmosphere in order and describe what happens in each (weather in the troposphere, the ozone layer in the stratosphere, meteors burning up in the mesosphere, auroras in the thermosphere), find out how air pressure falls with altitude, and explain how the atmosphere protects life and keeps Earth warm through the greenhouse effect.

Grade 6 (ages 11–12) 55 minutes Earth science sequencing reading data explaining modeling

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the main gases in the atmosphere.
  • Name and describe the five layers of the atmosphere in order.
  • Explain how the atmosphere protects life on Earth.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and ask students what would happen if Earth had no air.
  • Use the flashcards to teach the layers and key terms, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the air pressure homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Layer model: students stack colored paper strips to build a labeled model of the five layers.
  • Air pressure demo: place an index card over a full cup of water, turn it upside down and watch air pressure hold the card.
  • Gas pie: color a 100-square grid to show 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases.

Differentiation

Support: give a labeled diagram and focus on the troposphere, stratosphere and ozone. Challenge: explain why temperature rises in the stratosphere and thermosphere but falls in the troposphere and mesosphere.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check gases, layers and protection (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the layer model and explanations.

Teacher Tips

Use a memory sentence for the layer order from the ground up: Tall Students Make Tall Experiments (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere).
