Round It! Rounding to the Nearest Ten

About This Resource

A free Grade 2 math lesson and worksheet on rounding two-digit numbers to the nearest ten: using a number line, finding the two tens a number sits between, the rule for 5, and rounding in real life. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Children learn to round a two-digit number to the nearest ten. They find the two tens the number sits between, use a number line to see which ten is closer, and learn that a number ending in 5 rounds up. They round twelve numbers, choose the nearest ten, decide if statements are true or false and use rounding to estimate in everyday situations.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 40 minutes Place value rounding number lines estimating reasoning

Student Task

  • Draw a number line from 30 to 40 on the board and ask where 37 goes and which ten it is closer to.
  • Teach the rule for 5, then do the first questions of activity 1 together.
  • Children complete activities 2 to 5; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Human number line: ten children stand holding 40 to 50; a child with a mystery number walks to the closer ten.
  • Rounding hill: draw a hill with 0 to 4 going up and 5 to 9 rolling down to the next ten.
  • Shop estimate: round the prices of two toys and add to estimate the total.

Differentiation

Support: give a number line for every question and start with numbers that are clearly close to one ten. Challenge: round three-digit numbers to the nearest ten and explain why 45 rounds to 50.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activity 1 checks rounding; activities 2 to 5 check understanding and reasoning (answer key included).

Learning Objectives

  • Find the two tens that a two-digit number sits between.
  • Round a two-digit number to the nearest ten using a number line.
  • Know that a number ending in 5 rounds up to the next ten.
