Round It Up or Down: Rounding Large Numbers

About This Resource

A free Grade 4 math lesson and worksheet on rounding multi-digit numbers to the nearest hundred, thousand and ten thousand: finding the rounding digit, looking at the digit to its right, using number lines and estimating in real life. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn to round whole numbers up to six digits. They underline the digit in the place they are rounding to, look at the digit to its right, and round up if it is 5 or more or keep the digit the same if it is 4 or less. They round to the nearest hundred, thousand and ten thousand, use number lines to check, spot rounding mistakes and use rounding to estimate populations, distances and prices.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 45 minutes Place value rounding estimating number lines reasoning

Student Task

  • Show 4,682 on a number line from 4,000 to 5,000 and ask which thousand it is nearer to.
  • Teach the underline-and-look-right method, then do the first questions of activity 1 together.
  • Students complete the rest of the worksheet; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Rounding rap: "Underline the place, look next door, 5 or more, raise the score; 4 or less, let it rest."
  • City populations: students round the populations of five cities to the nearest thousand and order them.
  • Card draw: students draw five digit cards, make a number and round it three different ways.

Differentiation

Support: use place value charts and round only to the nearest hundred and thousand. Challenge: round to the nearest hundred thousand and find the smallest and largest numbers that round to 50,000.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 to 3 check rounding; activities 4 to 6 check understanding and estimating (answer key included).

Learning Objectives

  • Use the digit to the right of the rounding place to decide whether to round up or down.
