Overview

Each of the six main problems is set in an everyday, real-life context and asks students to work out a difference, show their reasoning, write a number sentence, and complete a sentence-frame answer. A seventh challenge problem, using larger numbers, gives early finishers or advanced students a further stretch without requiring different instructions. Contexts and units are kept currency-neutral and metric throughout, so the worksheet works equally well for a class in any country.

Use this worksheet once students are comfortable with the written column method, ideally after the Practice Worksheet. Model the first problem together as a class, having students underline the two numbers in the text and circle the unit before subtracting, then let students work through the remaining problems independently or in pairs. The challenge problem can be assigned to the whole class, offered only to early finishers, or skipped entirely depending on your class's pace.

Classroom Use

Write Your Own: after completing the worksheet, have students write one original word problem of their own, set in a context from their own life (a market, a bus trip, a school event), swap with a partner, and solve each other's problem.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a partner to help read problem text aloud, offer the sentence frame "There are ___ [unit] left" already partly filled in, and reduce the set to the first four problems.
ON-LEVEL: Complete all six main problems independently, attempting the challenge problem if time allows.
CHALLENGE: Complete the challenge problem and create one additional 3-digit word problem of their own to solve.

Answer Key & Assessment

Completed worksheet reviewed against the answer key, with attention to whether the written number sentence and the full-sentence answer both use the correct unit.
