Weather Watchers: Measuring the Weather

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 science pack on measuring weather: thermometers, rain gauges, wind vanes and anemometers, reading temperatures, and recording weather data in charts and picture graphs. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, editable slides and Word files, and answer keys.

Overview

Students become weather watchers. They learn which tool measures each part of the weather (a thermometer for temperature, a rain gauge for rainfall, a wind vane for wind direction and an anemometer for wind speed), practise reading thermometers in degrees Celsius, and read a picture graph of a month's weather. They finish by keeping their own weather chart and looking for patterns. Every thermometer and graph answer is calculated by the generator and checked automatically.

Grade 3 (ages 8–9) 50 minutes Observing measuring reading scales recording data interpreting graphs

Learning Objectives

  • Name weather tools and say what each one measures.
  • Read temperatures on a thermometer in degrees Celsius.
  • Record weather observations in a chart and use data to describe weather patterns.

Lesson Procedure

  • Teach the lesson with the slides; if you can, take students outside to look at the sky and feel the wind.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice.
  • Give the quiz at the end of the lesson or the next day; use the rubric for the written answers.
  • Send the homework weather chart home for three days and use the A5 flashcards for review.

Assessment

The quiz (13 points) checks weather tools, reading thermometers and using data. The rubric gives four levels for tools, thermometers, recording data and using science words.

Differentiation

Support: count the marks on the thermometer together in twos from the nearest labelled number. Challenge: ask students to find the difference between two temperatures.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Class weather station: put a thermometer and a rain gauge outside and let a different student record the weather each day.
  • Make a wind vane from a straw, a pencil, a pin and card, and test which way the wind is coming from.
  • Weather reporter: students present the day's weather like a TV forecaster using their chart.

Teacher Tips

Ask students to read the thermometer with their eyes level with the top of the red line. Practise counting the small marks in twos before reading temperatures.
