Who Is This? — Speaking Activity

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to ask and answer "Who is this? / This is my ___." with a partner.
• Students will be able to ask and answer "How many people are in your family?"
• Students will be able to talk briefly about a family (real, chosen, or invented) in simple sentences.

How to Use This Resource

• Model Part 1's dialogue with a student volunteer before pairs practice it themselves.
• Have partners take turns with Part 2, pointing at the picture row and asking/answering "Who is this?"
• Introduce Part 3 by reminding students that families come in many forms and that any answer is welcome.
• Let students who want extra support draw a family member in the box before speaking.

Classroom Activity Ideas

• Turn Part 2 into a "Mystery Family Member" game: one partner covers a picture with their hand and describes it ("She is a grown-up. She is in my family.") for the other to guess.

Differentiation

Support: let students answer Part 3 with a single word or a point at their drawing rather than a full sentence, and pair them with a supportive partner.
Extension: ask capable students to add a second detail, such as "This is my sister. She is funny."

Assessment

Circulate during Part 2 and Part 3 and note which students can produce both question patterns unprompted versus those who need the sentence starter modeled — this is a speaking check, not a scored assignment.

Teacher Tips

Before Part 3, quietly remind the class that it's OK to talk about a real family member, someone they choose, or a made-up family — this small framing note at the start prevents any student from feeling put on the spot.
