Your Body's Shield: The Skin

About This Resource

A free Grade 4 science worksheet on the skin: the skin as the body's largest organ, its three layers (epidermis, dermis and fatty layer), its jobs (protecting, feeling, controlling temperature and making vitamin D), sweat and goose bumps, how cuts heal, and caring for skin with sun protection and washing. Includes a timed lesson plan, a six-activity worksheet, an editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that the skin is the body's largest organ and works like a shield. They label the three layers of skin, match each layer to its job, and discover how the skin keeps germs out, senses touch, heat and pain, and keeps the body at the right temperature through sweating and goose bumps. They read about how a scrape heals, sort healthy and unhealthy skin habits and explain how to protect skin from the sun.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 45 minutes Life science labeling reading classifying explaining

Student Task

  • Ask students to press a finger on the back of their hand and then on a pencil tip (gently). Ask: "Which organ told you about the difference?"
  • Teach the layers and jobs of the skin, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Fingerprint detectives: students press a finger on an ink pad, make prints and compare their patterns with a magnifying glass.
  • Touch test: in pairs, one student gently touches the other's palm and back of hand with one or two pencil tips to see where skin is most sensitive.
  • Sweat test: students wet one wrist and blow on both wrists to feel how evaporation cools the skin.

Differentiation

Support: give a labeled skin diagram and a word bank for each activity. Challenge: research why skin color differs (melanin) and explain how it protects against the sun.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 to 5 check skin layers, jobs and healthy habits (answer key included). Activity 6 checks explaining how the skin works.

Learning Objectives

  • Name the three layers of skin and describe what each one does.
  • Explain how the skin protects the body, senses the world and controls temperature.
  • Describe healthy habits that keep skin safe.

Teacher Tips

Compare the skin to a raincoat that also has sensors and a cooling system. The analogy helps students remember that skin protects, feels and controls temperature.
