Always, Usually, Never: Adverbs of Frequency

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 ESL lesson pack on adverbs of frequency: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely and never, a frequency scale, word order with the verb be and other verbs, asking "How often …?" and writing about daily routines. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn six adverbs of frequency and place them on a scale from always (100%) to never (0%). They learn the word order rules: the adverb goes before most verbs (I usually walk to school) but after the verb be (She is always happy). They ask and answer "How often do you …?", read about a student's week, correct word order mistakes and write about their own routines.

Learning Objectives

  • Use always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely and never to say how often something happens.
  • Put adverbs of frequency in the correct place in a sentence.
  • Ask and answer questions with "How often …?"

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and draw the frequency scale on the board.
  • Use the flashcards for a frequency line game, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the routine survey homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Human scale: stick always and never on opposite walls; students stand on the line to answer "How often do you eat vegetables?"
  • Class survey: students ask five classmates "How often do you …?" and report back.
  • True or false about me: students write three sentences with adverbs and the class guesses which one is false.

Differentiation

Support: start with always, sometimes and never. Challenge: add once a week and twice a day and write a paragraph about a family member's routine.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check meaning and word order (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the routine writing.

Teacher Tips

Use percentages on the scale (always 100%, usually 90%, often 70%, sometimes 50%, rarely 10%, never 0%). Students find it easier to choose the right word.
