Overview

Children learn what each question word asks about: a person (who), a thing (what), a place (where), a time (when), a reason (why), a way (how), a choice (which) and an owner (whose). They match questions to answers, choose the right question word, put words in the right order (Where do you live? What is your name?), and use their questions to interview a classmate and write a short report.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Answer first: the teacher says an answer ("At the park.") and children race to make a question ("Where do you play?").
Interview circle: children sit in two circles and ask each other a question with a different wh- word each turn.
Mystery person: children ask wh- questions to find out about a mystery character.

Differentiation

Support: focus on who, what, where and when with is questions. Challenge: add how many, how often and which questions and ask follow-up questions.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check meanings and word order. Use the rubric for the interview in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Write the word order pattern on the board and leave it up: question word + do/does + person + verb. It helps children who translate word for word from their first language.
