Some Milk, Two Eggs: Countable and Uncountable Nouns

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 ESL grammar pack on countable and uncountable nouns: a/an, plurals, some and any, how many and how much, and containers such as a bottle of water and a slice of bread. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children sort food and kitchen words into things we can count (an egg, two apples) and things we cannot count (milk, rice, bread). They learn that countable nouns can take a, an and plurals, while uncountable nouns cannot, use some in positive sentences and any in questions and negatives, ask how many and how much, and count uncountable things with containers such as a glass of milk or a bowl of rice. The lesson ends with planning a shopping list for a party.

Grade 4 ESL (ages 9–10), A2 45 minutes Grammar food vocabulary speaking asking questions writing a list

Learning Objectives

  • Sort nouns into countable and uncountable.
  • Use a/an, some, any, how many and how much correctly.
  • Use containers and units such as a bottle of water and a slice of bread.

How to Use This Resource

  • Bring a shopping bag with a few real or picture items (eggs, a bottle of water, rice, apples) and ask: "Can we count it?"
  • Teach the rules with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the shopping list homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Shopping role-play: one child is the shopkeeper and the other asks "Do you have any bread? How much rice do you need?"
  • Kitchen sort: sort picture cards into countable and uncountable hoops.
  • Recipe hunt: children read a simple recipe and underline countable and uncountable ingredients in two colors.

Differentiation

Support: focus on a/an versus some with food pictures. Challenge: add uncountable nouns that are not food, such as homework, information and advice.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check the rules. Use the rubric for the party shopping list in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Ask "Can you count it one, two, three?" for every new noun. You can count apples, but you cannot count milk, so you count the glasses of milk instead.
