Big, Red and Fluffy! Describing with Adjectives

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 ESL lesson pack on adjectives: words that describe size, color, shape, feelings and how things look, feel or sound, placing an adjective before a noun, and writing describing sentences. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn that adjectives are describing words that tell us more about a noun. They describe size, color, shape and feelings, learn that the adjective usually comes before the noun (a red ball), find adjectives in sentences, sort them into groups, choose the best adjective for each picture and write their own describing sentences about a mystery object.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that an adjective describes a noun.
  • Find adjectives in simple sentences.
  • Use adjectives before a noun to write describing sentences.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and describe a mystery object in a bag using adjectives.
  • Use the flashcards for a describing game, then complete the worksheet together and in pairs.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Mystery bag: put an object in a bag; children feel it and describe it with adjectives (soft, round, small).
  • Adjective chain: each child adds one adjective to describe a picture (a big, brown, happy dog).
  • Opposite pairs: show one card (big) and children find its opposite adjective card (small).

Differentiation

Support: focus on color and size adjectives with pictures. Challenge: use two adjectives before a noun and write a short description of a friend or pet.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check finding and using adjectives (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the describing sentences.

Teacher Tips

Ask "What is it like?" to elicit adjectives. Remind children that the adjective comes before the noun in English: a red apple, not an apple red.
