First, Next, Then, Last: Sequencing Events

About This Resource

A free Grade 2 ESL reading worksheet on sequencing events: the order words first, next, then and last, putting the steps of everyday activities in order, reading a short story and numbering what happened, choosing the right order word, and writing the steps for making a sandwich. Includes a timed lesson plan, a six-activity worksheet, an editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that stories and instructions happen in an order, and that the words first, next, then and last help readers follow it. They order the steps for brushing teeth and planting a seed, read a short story about a rainy-day picnic and number the events, choose the correct order word for each sentence, check true and false statements about the order of the story and finish by writing four steps for making a sandwich.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8), beginner ESL 40 minutes Reading comprehension sequencing order words writing instructions speaking

Student Task

  • Act out putting on your shoes in the wrong order (shoe before sock). Ask: "What went wrong?"
  • Teach first, next, then and last with picture steps, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Silly order: act out a routine in the wrong order and students tell you how to fix it with first, next, then, last.
  • Human story line: give four students a sentence each from a story; the class puts them in order.
  • Sandwich time: students give step-by-step instructions while the teacher follows them exactly.

Differentiation

Support: give picture cards for each step and let students order them before writing. Challenge: use more order words (after that, finally) and retell the story in five sentences.
