First, Second, Third! Ordinal Numbers to Tenth

About This Resource

A free Grade 1 math lesson and worksheet on ordinal numbers from first to tenth: saying and writing ordinal words and numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd), describing position in a line, before and after, a race podium and a lining-up game. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Children learn that ordinal numbers tell us position or order: who is first, second or third in a line. They match ordinal words to short forms (first and 1st), describe where animals are in a parade, answer before-and-after questions, read a short race story and line up classmates to act out positions. They also learn the difference between counting how many (three) and telling the position (third).
