Grade 5 Free Time and Hobbies Vocabulary Worksheet
About This Resource
A four-activity worksheet that has students match, sort, spell, and independently write 12 free-time and hobby words, moving from picture support to no support at all.
Overview
This worksheet builds vocabulary confidence in stages. Activity 1 has students match six pictures to their words using a word bank — the easiest entry point. Activity 2 asks students to sort all 12 hobbies into Active Hobbies and Quiet Hobbies, which requires them to actually think about each word's meaning rather than just recognise its picture. Activity 3 gives picture support and most of each word's letters, asking students to fill in what's missing. Activity 4 removes all support: students see a picture only and must write the word from memory. By the end, a student has engaged with the vocabulary four different ways.

Student Task
- Best used after the Vocabulary PowerPoint has introduced all 12 words. Students can complete it independently at their desks, or in pairs for extra language support, particularly on Activity 2's sorting task, which benefits from a bit of discussion. Circulate during Activity 4, since it's the most demanding part and some students may need a quiet reminder of a tricky word.
Classroom Use
- Turn Activity 4 into a quick partner check: once students have written all four words independently, have them swap papers with a partner and check each other's spelling against the word list on the board, circling anything to fix. Peer-checking spelling keeps the activity social and gives a second look at each word.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Allow students to complete only Activities 1–3, or provide a printed word list on the desk during Activity 4 instead of requiring pure recall. Pair with a stronger partner for Activity 2's sorting discussion.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four activities independently in one sitting.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to write one full sentence using each word from Activity 4, rather than just the single word.
Answer Key & Assessment
Collect and mark against the answer key, or have students self-check using the answer key read aloud as a class. Activity 4 is the best single indicator of vocabulary retention, since it requires no supports.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify 12 hobby and free-time words from pictures.
- Students will be able to classify hobbies as active or quiet based on their meaning.
- Students will be able to spell hobby words with picture support.
- Students will be able to write hobby words independently from memory.
Teacher Tips
Activity 2's Active/Quiet sort has a couple of genuinely debatable placements (gardening and fishing can reasonably go either way) — treat student disagreement here as a good discussion opportunity rather than something to correct quickly. Ask a student to explain their reasoning before telling them the "expected" answer.
