Grade 9 Personal Identity Unit Grading Rubric (4-Criteria Analytic Scale)
About This Resource
A 1-scale, 4-criteria rubric (Accuracy, Reasoning, Completion, Communication) for scoring every open-response task across the unit, plus a class tracking sheet.
Overview
Every worksheet in this topic already has a fixed-answer section scored by its own answer key, but several also include an open-response section — the Identity Wheel reflection, the Then and Now Challenge, the Writing Activity paragraph, or the Speaking Activity. This rubric applies one consistent 1-3 scale across all of them, with a "Where This Rubric Applies" table showing exactly which section of which resource to score, and a blank class tracking sheet for recording scores across the whole unit.

Learning Objectives
- Teachers will be able to apply one consistent scoring scale across every open-response task in the unit.
- Teachers will be able to track each student's progress across the unit using the included tracking sheet.
How to Use This Resource
- Keep this rubric on hand throughout the unit rather than only at the end — score the Identity Wheel reflection and the Then and Now Challenge as you go, then use the same rubric again for the Writing Activity, Speaking Activity, and the Unit Assessment's Part E.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Share the rubric's language ("accurate," "complete sentence") with students before the Writing Activity so they know what a strong response looks like before they start writing.
Differentiation
Support: For students working below grade level, score Accuracy and Completion only, and offer verbal credit for Reasoning given aloud even if not fully written.
On-Level: Score all 4 criteria for every full open-response task as designed.
Challenge: For advanced students, hold their Reasoning criterion to a higher bar — expect them to reference a specific trait word or part of identity, not just a general statement.
Teacher Tips
For a single fill-in-the-blank or one-line response (not a full paragraph or speech), score only Accuracy and Completion out of 6 — Reasoning and Communication are designed for longer, sentence-level responses.
