Grade 9 The Environment and Sustainability Review Quiz

About This Resource

A 20-mark review quiz for Grade 9 ESL students covering the full Environment and Sustainability topic: vocabulary, opinion and persuasive language, a short reading passage, and a written opinion response.

Overview

This quiz brings together everything taught across the topic in one assessment. Section A checks vocabulary through a five-word matching exercise. Section B checks the language of opinion, agreement, importance, and contrast through a five-item cloze exercise. Section C presents a short original passage about a riverbank tree-planting project and asks three comprehension questions. Section D asks students to respond in writing to a provocative statement about recycling, giving their opinion and a reason. The mix of sections means the quiz checks vocabulary, grammar/functional language, reading, and writing in a single sitting.

Question Types & Suggested Use

This resource is itself an assessment. Use the included answer key and the score bands (18-20 Excellent, 14-17 Good, 10-13 Satisfactory, below 10 needs review) to judge overall performance and identify students who may need to revisit vocabulary or opinion language before moving to the next topic.

Skills Assessed

  • Students will be able to match environment vocabulary to its correct definition.
  • Students will be able to complete sentences using correct opinion and persuasive language.
  • Students will be able to answer comprehension questions about a short reading passage.
  • Students will be able to write a short opinion response with a supporting reason.

How to Administer

  • Administer this quiz after completing the topic's core resources (Vocabulary Worksheet, Language Worksheet, Reading Activity, and ideally the Speaking or Writing Activity). Allow students to work independently and silently. The quiz should take most students 20-30 minutes. Mark Sections A, B, and C against the answer key, and use the marking guidance provided for Section D, since student writing will vary in wording even when the opinion and reasoning are sound.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow access to the topic's vocabulary list during Section A only, and permit students to answer Section D in note form or as two short sentences rather than a full paragraph.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four sections independently under normal quiz conditions.
CHALLENGE: Ask stronger students to extend their Section D response with a second reason, or to identify and label the opinion phrase they used.

Follow-Up Activities

  • After returning marked quizzes, put students in pairs to compare their Section D answers and identify one thing they could add to strengthen their partner's reasoning — a short, low-stakes way to review persuasive writing right after assessment.

Teacher Tips

Read Section D's statement aloud before students begin the quiz, without discussing it — it primes students to think about their opinion while completing the earlier sections, and they often write a stronger final response as a result.
