Grade 9 The Environment and Sustainability Grading Rubric

About This Resource

A four-criteria grading rubric for assessing Grade 9 student work on the Environment and Sustainability topic, covering opinion and persuasive language, environment vocabulary, strength of argument, and communication and organization. Suitable for grading the topic's speaking activity, writing activity, or a similar opinion-based task.

Overview

This rubric gives teachers a consistent way to score student opinion-giving and persuasive work tied to this topic. It uses four performance levels (Exceeds Expectations, Meets Expectations, Developing, Needs Support) across four criteria: how well a student uses opinion and persuasive language, how accurately and naturally they use environment vocabulary, how strong and well-supported their argument is, and how clearly their speech or writing is organized. A total-score interpretation guide is included so teachers can quickly translate a score into an overall judgement of performance.

How to Use This Resource

  • Use this rubric to assess either the topic's Speaking Activity (debate) or the Writing Activity (persuasive letter), or any other opinion-based task you set for this topic. Score each of the four criteria from 1 to 4 based on the descriptor that best matches the student's work, then add the four scores for a total out of 16. Use the score bands at the bottom of the rubric to interpret the total, and share specific criteria scores with students so they know exactly what to improve next time.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Have students use a simplified version of the rubric to peer-assess a partner's persuasive paragraph before submitting it to you, focusing only on the "Opinion and Persuasive Language" and "Environment Vocabulary" rows. This gives them one more low-stakes round of practice noticing target language.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: When scoring, weigh accurate use of at least the required sentence frames more heavily than range or complexity of vocabulary for students who are newer to English.
ON-LEVEL: Apply all four criteria as written.
CHALLENGE: For advanced students, hold them to the "Exceeds Expectations" descriptors as the standard target rather than "Meets Expectations."

Teacher Tips

Share the rubric with students before they begin their speaking or writing task, not just after — when students know exactly what "Exceeds Expectations" looks like for persuasive language, they tend to reach for those phrases deliberately rather than by chance.
