"Hello!" She Said: Quotation Marks and Dialogue

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 ESL writing lesson pack on quotation marks and dialogue: putting quotation marks around spoken words, commas and end punctuation inside the quotation marks, capital letters, speaker tags before and after the quote, starting a new line for each new speaker and using stronger verbs than said. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn to show exactly what characters say. They put quotation marks around spoken words, use a capital letter to start the quote, place commas, question marks and exclamation points inside the closing quotation mark, write speaker tags before or after the quote, and start a new paragraph each time a new person speaks. They replace said with verbs such as asked, shouted and whispered, punctuate a comic strip conversation and write a short dialogue between two characters.

Grade 4 ESL (ages 9–10), A2–B1 55 minutes Writing punctuation grammar reading speaking

Learning Objectives

  • Use quotation marks, commas and end punctuation correctly in dialogue.
  • Write speaker tags before and after the spoken words.
  • Start a new line for each new speaker and use varied speech verbs.

How to Use This Resource

  • Act out a short conversation with a student, then show it written as dialogue on the slides.
  • Use the flashcards to review speech verbs and punctuation, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the comic-to-dialogue homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Speech bubble swap: give students comic strips; they rewrite each speech bubble as a sentence with quotation marks.
  • Human punctuation: students hold cards for quotation marks, a comma and a question mark and stand in the right places in a sentence.
  • Said is tired: students brainstorm better verbs (shouted, whispered, giggled, explained) and act them out.

Differentiation

Support: practise speaker tags before the quote only, with a sentence frame. Challenge: write a split quotation ("I think," said Ben, "we should go.") and a dialogue with three speakers.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check punctuation and layout of dialogue (answer keys included). Use the rubric to assess the written dialogue.

Teacher Tips

Tell students that quotation marks hug the spoken words like hands, and the punctuation belongs inside the hug. A simple rule they can say aloud helps them check their writing.
