Paint with Words: Writing a Descriptive Paragraph

About This Resource

A complete Grade 7 ESL writing lesson pack on the descriptive paragraph: the topic sentence, supporting details and concluding sentence, using the five senses, vivid adjectives and strong verbs, similes, showing instead of telling, spatial order, and planning, drafting, revising and peer-editing a paragraph about a place. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn how a descriptive paragraph helps a reader see, hear, smell, taste and feel a place. They study a model paragraph about a busy market, label its topic sentence, sensory details and concluding sentence, and collect sensory words. They practise upgrading plain sentences with vivid adjectives, strong verbs and similes, turn telling sentences into showing sentences, and use spatial order words (in front of, beside, in the distance). Finally, they plan a paragraph about a place they know with a five-senses chart, draft it, revise it with a checklist and give feedback to a partner.

Grade 7 (ages 12–13), intermediate ESL 60 minutes (or two 40-minute lessons) Writing vocabulary sentence building reading a model text peer feedback

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the topic sentence, supporting sensory details and concluding sentence in a descriptive paragraph.
  • Use sensory details, vivid adjectives, strong verbs, similes and spatial order to describe a place.
  • Plan, draft and revise a well-organized descriptive paragraph using a checklist.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: show a photo of a busy market and ask students what they would hear, smell and feel if they were there.
  • Teach the paragraph structure, sensory language, showing not telling and spatial order with the slides, checking each step with the matching worksheet activity.
  • Students plan and draft their paragraph, revise with the checklist, then use the quiz to check and the homework to publish a final copy. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Mystery place: students read their paragraphs aloud without naming the place; the class guesses where it is.
  • Sense stations: set up stations with something to touch, smell, taste and hear; students write two vivid words at each station.
  • Upgrade relay: teams take turns improving a dull sentence one word at a time until it is vivid.

Differentiation

Support: give a paragraph frame with the topic sentence started, a word bank of sensory adjectives and a completed planning chart model. Challenge: use a metaphor and personification, vary sentence beginnings, and describe the same place at two different times of day.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check paragraph structure, sensory language and showing sentences (answer key included). The final paragraph is marked with the four-level rubric for structure, sensory details, word choice and conventions.

Teacher Tips

Model your own paragraph live on the board, thinking aloud as you choose words. Students learn more from seeing you cross out "nice" and replace it with "warm and golden" than from any list. Limit adjectives to one or two per noun so the writing stays clear.
