Make Your Case: Argumentative Essay Structure

About This Resource

A complete Grade 10 ESL writing lesson pack on the argumentative essay: the five-paragraph structure, writing a hook and a clear thesis statement, body paragraphs with topic sentences, evidence and explanation, addressing a counterargument and rebuttal, linking words, formal academic tone, and a strong conclusion. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn how to build a convincing argumentative essay step by step. They study a model essay on whether schools should start later in the morning, label its hook, thesis, topic sentences, evidence, counterargument, rebuttal and conclusion, and identify the linking words that guide the reader. They practise turning topics into arguable thesis statements, matching evidence to claims, using the PEEL structure (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) and writing a polite rebuttal. Finally, they plan their own essay with an outline, write the introduction and one body paragraph in class, and complete the full essay for homework.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the parts of an argumentative essay, including the thesis, body paragraphs, counterargument, rebuttal and conclusion.
  • Write an arguable thesis statement and body paragraphs using the PEEL structure with relevant evidence.
  • Address a counterargument respectfully and use linking words and a formal tone to persuade the reader.

How to Use This Resource

  • Open with slide 1: ask "Should schools start later in the morning?" Take a quick class vote and ask two students to give a reason.
  • Teach the essay structure, thesis statements, PEEL paragraphs, counterarguments and conclusions with the slides and the model essay, checking each step with the matching worksheet activity.
  • Students plan their essay and draft the introduction and one body paragraph in class, then finish the full essay for homework. Use the quiz to check understanding. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Four corners debate: label corners Strongly agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly disagree; students move to a corner and give one reason and one piece of evidence.
  • Thesis makeover: groups improve weak thesis statements ("Phones are bad") into specific, arguable ones.
  • Rebuttal relay: one student states a counterargument; the next must respond politely using "While it is true that..., ...".

Differentiation

Support: give an outline template with sentence starters for each paragraph, a bank of linking words and two pieces of evidence for each side of the issue. Challenge: write an essay that includes statistics and a quotation, use a concession in the introduction, and vary sentence structure with complex sentences.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check essay structure, thesis statements, PEEL paragraphs and counterarguments (answer key included). The final essay is marked with the four-level rubric for argument, organization, evidence and language.

Teacher Tips

Show students that a thesis is a promise: the essay must deliver every reason the thesis mentions, in the same order. Have them highlight the reasons in their thesis and the matching topic sentences in the same color to check that the essay keeps its promise.
