Hold It, Pour It, Fill It: Solids, Liquids and Gases

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 science lesson pack on the three states of matter: solids keep their shape, liquids flow and take the shape of their container, gases spread out to fill any space, sorting everyday materials, melting and freezing, steam and a balloon investigation. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that everything around us is matter and that matter comes in three states. Solids keep their own shape (a block, a spoon), liquids flow and take the shape of their container (water, juice) and gases spread out to fill the space they are in (the air in a balloon). Students sort materials, test how liquids pour, blow up a balloon to see a gas take up space, watch ice melt and water freeze, read about a pot of soup and explain how heating and cooling change one state into another.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 50 minutes Physical science observing classifying investigating explaining

Learning Objectives

  • Describe solids, liquids and gases by how they behave.
  • Sort everyday materials into solids, liquids and gases.
  • Explain that heating and cooling can change water from one state to another.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show a block, a cup of water and a balloon. Ask how each one is different, then teach with the slides.
  • Use the flashcards to sort materials, then complete the worksheet with the simple investigations.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the kitchen hunt homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Pour test: pour the same amount of water into a tall glass, a bowl and a bottle and watch it change shape.
  • Balloon breath: blow up a balloon and let it go; talk about where the gas went.
  • Ice race: give each group an ice cube on a plate; who can make it melt fastest using only their hands?

Differentiation

Support: focus on solids and liquids first with real objects to hold and pour. Challenge: explain why sand pours but is still a solid (each grain keeps its shape).

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check describing and sorting states of matter (answer keys included). Use the rubric during the investigations.

Teacher Tips

Act out the particles: solids stand close together and wiggle, liquids slide past each other, gases run around the room. Children remember the three states through movement.
