Who Eats What? Food Chains

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 science lesson pack on food chains: how energy from the Sun passes from plants to animals, producers and consumers, herbivores, carnivores and omnivores, predators and prey, putting food chains in order, a pond food chain story and what happens when one link is missing. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that a food chain shows who eats what. Every food chain starts with the Sun and a plant (a producer) that makes its own food. Animals are consumers: herbivores eat plants, carnivores eat other animals and omnivores eat both. Students order the links in grass, garden and pond food chains, sort animals by what they eat, identify predators and prey, read a short pond story and explain what might happen if one animal in a chain disappeared.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 50 minutes Life science sequencing classifying reading explaining cause and effect

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that a food chain shows how energy passes from the Sun to plants to animals.
  • Identify producers and consumers, and sort animals as herbivores, carnivores or omnivores.
  • Put the links of a simple food chain in the correct order and explain what happens if a link is removed.

How to Use This Resource

  • Ask: "What did you eat for lunch? Where did that food get its energy?" and trace it back to the Sun with the slides.
  • Use the flashcards to build food chains on the board, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Paper chain: students write one link on each paper strip (Sun, grass, grasshopper, frog, snake) and loop them into a chain.
  • Food chain line-up: give students picture cards; they find their partners and line up in the right order.
  • Missing link: remove one card from a chain and discuss what happens to the animals above and below it.

Differentiation

Support: work with three-link food chains and picture cards. Challenge: connect two food chains that share an animal and talk about food webs.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check ordering chains and classifying animals (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the paper chain and explanations.

Teacher Tips

Teach the arrow as "is eaten by" or "gives energy to". Students often draw arrows the wrong way; saying "grass is eaten by the rabbit" while drawing helps.
