Letter Formation / Handwriting Practice

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to correctly form each uppercase and lowercase letter by hand.
• Students will be able to write a letter independently after a traced model.

How to Use This Resource

• Assign a few rows at a time, matching whichever letters are being taught that week (see the Teacher's Guide's pacing plan) rather than assigning all 26 rows in one sitting.
• Have students trace the grey guide letters first with a pencil, saying the letter's sound out loud as they trace.
• Then have students write the letter independently on the blank lines.
• Check formation (starting point, stroke direction) as students work, not just the finished shape.

Classroom Activity Ideas

• Before writing, have students "sky write" the letter in the air together as a class while saying its sound, then transition straight into the pencil tracing on the page.

Differentiation

Support: focus on tracing only for students who are not yet ready for independent writing, and allow extra rows of tracing before removing the guide.

Extension: have early finishers write the letter a second time on scrap paper without any guide at all, then compare it to the traced version.

Assessment

This is a formative practice resource rather than a graded one; observe letter formation directly while students work rather than only checking the finished page.

Teacher Tips

Pair this worksheet with other multisensory practice — air-tracing, tracing in sand or shaving cream, or forming the letter with a body pose — rather than using it as the only handwriting practice; young learners retain letter shapes better through movement, not paper alone.
