Look Up! The Sun, Moon and Stars

About This Resource

A complete Grade 1 science lesson pack on objects in the sky: the Sun as our closest star that gives light and heat, day and night, the Moon and how its shape seems to change, stars and simple star patterns, what we can see in the day sky and the night sky, and staying safe in the Sun. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children observe and describe the sky. They learn that the Sun is a star that gives us light and heat, that we see it in the day, and that the Moon and stars are easiest to see at night. They sort day-sky and night-sky objects, find out that the Moon does not make its own light, notice that its shape seems to change over a month, read a short bedtime story, draw a simple star pattern and learn how to stay safe in the Sun.

Grade 1 (ages 6–7) 45 minutes Observing sorting recording explaining drawing

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the Sun, the Moon and stars and when we can see them.
  • Explain that the Sun gives Earth light and heat.
  • Observe that the Moon's shape seems to change and record what they see.

How to Use This Resource

  • Ask children what they see in the sky in the day and at night, then teach with the slides.
  • Use the flashcards to sort day and night sky objects, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the Moon diary homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Day and night sort: children sort picture cards into a day sky and a night sky poster.
  • Flashlight Moon: in a dark corner, shine a flashlight on a ball to show that the Moon reflects sunlight.
  • Star patterns: children join star stickers with lines to make their own star picture and give it a name.

Differentiation

Support: focus on Sun (day) and Moon and stars (night) with picture cards. Challenge: explain why we cannot see stars in the day even though they are still there.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check describing and sorting sky objects (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the Moon diary and explanations.

Teacher Tips

Remind children never to look straight at the Sun, even with sunglasses. Use pictures and models of the Sun instead of looking at it.
