Spinning and Circling: Earth's Rotation and Revolution

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 science lesson pack on Earth's rotation and revolution: how Earth spinning on its axis causes day and night, why the Sun appears to move across the sky, how shadows change during the day, how one trip around the Sun makes a year, and how the tilt of Earth's axis causes the seasons. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn the difference between rotation (Earth spinning on its axis once every 24 hours) and revolution (Earth travelling around the Sun once every 365 days). With a flashlight and a globe they model day and night, explain why the Sun seems to rise in the east and set in the west, and track how shadows get shorter at midday and longer in the evening. They then learn that Earth's tilted axis makes sunlight more direct in summer and less direct in winter, which causes the seasons. A reading text, a shadow data table and diagram questions build understanding step by step.

Grade 5 (ages 10–11) 60 minutes Earth and space science modeling reading data explaining observing

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that Earth's rotation on its axis causes day and night and the apparent movement of the Sun.
  • Explain that one revolution of Earth around the Sun takes about 365 days and makes a year.
  • Describe how shadows change during the day and how the tilt of Earth's axis causes the seasons.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: ask why the Sun seems to move across the sky. Collect ideas without correcting them yet.
  • Model rotation, revolution and the seasons with a flashlight and a globe, following the slides and the teacher notes.
  • Students complete the worksheet, then use the quiz to check and the homework shadow log for practice. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Globe and flashlight: in a darkened room, one student holds a flashlight (the Sun) while another slowly spins a globe to show day and night.
  • Shadow tracking: place a stick in the schoolyard and mark the end of its shadow every hour; measure and compare the lengths.
  • Human orbit: one student is the Sun; another walks around them while spinning slowly, showing rotation and revolution at the same time.

Differentiation

Support: give a labeled diagram of Earth, its axis and the Sun, and pair students for the globe model. Challenge: explain why the seasons are opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and why places near the equator have similar temperatures all year.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check rotation, revolution, shadows and seasons (answer key included). The explanation questions and the rubric assess scientific reasoning.

Teacher Tips

Students often believe the Sun moves around Earth or that seasons are caused by Earth being closer to the Sun. Address both directly with the globe model: show that the Sun stays still while Earth spins, and that the tilt, not the distance, changes how direct the sunlight is.
