Round and Round: The Water Cycle

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 science lesson pack on the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection, how the Sun powers the cycle, clouds and different kinds of precipitation, a water cycle in a bag investigation, a story of one raindrop's journey and why clean water matters. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students follow water on its never-ending journey. The Sun heats water in oceans, lakes and puddles so it evaporates into water vapor. The vapor rises, cools and condenses into tiny droplets that form clouds. When the droplets join and get heavy, they fall as precipitation (rain, snow, sleet or hail) and collect in rivers, lakes, oceans and underground. Students label the cycle, set up a water cycle in a bag, read a raindrop's story, order the stages and explain how the Sun keeps the cycle going.

Grade 3 (ages 8–9) 55 minutes Earth science modeling sequencing observing explaining

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the four main stages of the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection.
  • Explain that the Sun's heat drives the water cycle.
  • Model the water cycle and use observations to explain each stage.

How to Use This Resource

  • Ask: "Where does a puddle go after the rain stops?" and teach the stages with the slides.
  • Set up the water cycle in a bag on a sunny window, use the flashcards, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Water cycle in a bag: draw the cycle on a zip bag, add a little blue water, tape it to a sunny window and observe over several days.
  • Cold glass: put ice water in a glass and watch droplets form on the outside (condensation).
  • Water cycle song and actions: wiggle fingers up for evaporation, gather in a cloud, fall for precipitation and slide into a river for collection.

Differentiation

Support: focus on three stages (evaporation, condensation, precipitation) with picture cards and actions. Challenge: explain where plants fit in (transpiration) and why the amount of water on Earth stays about the same.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check the stages and their order (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the bag investigation and the labeled diagram.

Teacher Tips

Children often think clouds are made of cotton. Show condensation on a cold glass and explain that clouds are millions of tiny water droplets made the same way.
