Overview

Grade 1 35-45 Minutes Grammar Writing

Student Task

Have students complete Part A independently, using the pictures as a guide.
Explain that Tom is a boy and Amy is a girl before students begin Part B.
Walk through the "Sam's family" key at the top of Part C together before students complete the sentences.
Check work together or using the included answer key.

Classroom Use

After Part C, describe a new fictional family member out loud ("Lin has a baby brother.") and have students give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down for whether the sentence uses "has a" correctly.

Differentiation

Support: complete Part A together as a class before releasing students to Part B and Part C independently.
Extension: have students write one original "his/her" sentence about a classmate's classroom object (e.g. "This is her pencil.").

Answer Key & Assessment

Grade all three parts against the answer key; this worksheet is scored using only the fixed example characters, never the student's own family.
