Nice to Meet You — Speaking Activity

About This Resource

A partner speaking activity with a model introduction dialogue, a picture-prompt drill, and an open "meet three new friends" mingle activity.

Overview

Part 1 gives students a short model dialogue to practice with a partner, introducing themselves, asking each other's name, and saying goodbye. Part 2 has partners take turns pointing to the ten greeting pictures and asking "What do you say?" Part 3 opens the activity up: students stand up and use the same dialogue pattern to introduce themselves to three real classmates, writing each new friend's name in a small box.

Grade 1 35-45 Minutes Speaking

How to Use This Resource

  • Students will be able to introduce themselves, ask and answer a new classmate's name, and greet and say goodbye to a partner using a complete short exchange.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • After the mingle activity, go around the room and have a few volunteers introduce the new friend they met ("This is Lily. She is my friend.") to build a short bridge into third-person language.

Differentiation

Support: let students use only Part 1's exact scripted lines during Part 3 rather than improvising, or pair them with a set partner instead of a full mingle.

Extension: have students add a follow-up question of their own (like "Do you like school?") after the scripted exchange ends.

Teacher Tips

Let Part 3 happen as genuine movement around the room rather than seated partner work — introductions are inherently physical and social, and having students actually walk up to a new classmate makes the greeting language feel real instead of rehearsed.
