Passed Down: Inherited and Acquired Traits

About This Resource

A complete Grade 6 science lesson pack on heredity: inherited traits passed from parents to offspring through genes, acquired traits and learned behaviors, how the environment can affect traits, variation within a species, Gregor Mendel's pea plant experiments, dominant and recessive traits, and simple Punnett squares. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that living things inherit traits from their parents through genes, which are instructions carried in DNA. They distinguish inherited traits (a dog's fur color, a flower's petal color) from acquired traits (a scar, a trimmed hedge) and learned behaviors (riding a bike, a parrot speaking words), and discover that the environment can also affect how traits appear, such as plants growing taller with more sunlight. They follow Gregor Mendel's pea plant experiments to learn about dominant and recessive traits, complete simple Punnett squares to predict offspring and explain why offspring of the same parents can look different.

Grade 6 (ages 11–12) 55 minutes Life science classifying reading predicting modeling

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish inherited traits from acquired traits and learned behaviors.
  • Explain that genes carry inherited traits from parents to offspring and that the environment can affect traits.
  • Use dominant and recessive traits and simple Punnett squares to predict the traits of offspring.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: show a mother cat and her kittens of different colors and ask, "Why do the kittens look like their mother but not exactly the same?"
  • Teach inherited and acquired traits, genes, Mendel's peas and Punnett squares with the slides, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6, then use the quiz to check and the homework family traits survey. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Trait sort: students sort picture cards of traits and behaviors into inherited, acquired and learned.
  • Coin crosses: pairs flip two coins (heads = dominant, tails = recessive) twenty times to model offspring and compare their results with a Punnett square.
  • Design a creature: students give two parent creatures traits and predict what their offspring might look like.

Differentiation

Support: give a trait sorting chart and a partly completed Punnett square, and focus on inherited and acquired traits. Challenge: explain why two purple-flowered pea plants can have a white-flowered offspring, and research how farmers use heredity to breed better crops.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check types of traits, genes, dominant and recessive traits and Punnett squares (answer key included). Explanations and the homework are checked with the rubric.

Teacher Tips

Use plants and animals for genetics examples. Human traits like eye color are controlled by many genes, so they do not follow simple dominant and recessive patterns, and family examples can be sensitive. Mendel's peas give clear, simple results.
