Kindergarten ESL (ages 5–6), pre-A1 30 minutes (repeat across several lessons) Phonics letter–sound knowledge listening letter writing vocabulary

Learning Objectives

  • Say the most common sound for each letter of the alphabet.
  • Hear the first sound in a simple word and match it to its letter.
  • Write the letter that matches a beginning sound.

How to Use This Resource

  • Teach four to six letters a day with the flashcards and slides, then review all the letters with the alphabet song.
  • Use the worksheet after the class has practised the sounds aloud. Read each picture name with the children.
  • Use the quiz to check sounds one to one, and send the homework page home for family practice.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Sound hunt: hold up a letter card and children find something in the classroom that starts with that sound.
  • Mystery bag: put small objects in a bag; a child pulls one out and the class says its first sound.
  • Alphabet line: give each child a picture card and ask the class to stand in A to Z order.

Differentiation

Support: focus on five letters at a time and use the picture cards every day. Challenge: children think of a second word for each letter and draw it.

Assessment

Use the quiz one to one or in small groups. The rubric covers letter names, letter sounds, matching pictures and writing letters.

Teacher Tips

Say short, clean sounds without adding an extra vowel sound at the end: /m/ should be a hum and /s/ should be a hiss. Clean sounds make blending much easier later.
