A hands-on sorting worksheet where students sort 18 animals — three per group — into the six animal groups using only their traits, no definitions provided. Includes two classic trick animals (a bat and a kangaroo among the mammals) to test real understanding, plus a bonus section where students generate their own example for each group.
This is the main practice worksheet for the Animals topic. Students are given a word bank of 18 animals in random order and six labeled sorting boxes (Mammals, Birds, Fish, Reptiles, Amphibians, Insects), each with exactly 3 blank lines. Because no definitions or hints are shown on the page, students must recall the traits taught in the PowerPoint and practiced in the Vocabulary Worksheet. A Bonus section then asks students to add one more real animal (not from the word bank) to each group — recall is harder than recognition, so this checks a deeper level of understanding than the sorting task alone. A short reflection question at the bottom asks students to justify one tricky choice in their own words.

SUPPORT: Provide a reduced word bank of 12 animals (drop the two trickiest — Bat and Kangaroo) and allow reference to the Vocabulary Worksheet's Part A while sorting. For the Bonus, allow one animal per pair of groups instead of all six.
ON-LEVEL: Completes all 18 animals independently using only recalled traits, then the Bonus section for all six groups.
CHALLENGE: After finishing, students add one more real-world animal of their own choosing to each of the six groups in the Bonus section, plus a second animal for any two groups of their choice.
Score the main sort out of 18 (one point per correctly placed animal) — see the answer key's scoring summary table. Treat the Bonus section and the "Think About It" reflection as a qualitative check of reasoning, not a right/wrong score; use the Grade 2 Animals Unit Grading Rubric if a formal score is needed.
Do not let students sort by "where it lives" as a shortcut — that's exactly the misconception Bat and Kangaroo are designed to catch. If several students get Bat wrong, it's worth re-showing the Mammals slide from the Introduction PowerPoint before moving further into the topic. In the Bonus section, watch for students reusing an animal already in the word bank — that's a sign they're still relying on recognition rather than recall.
