Grade 2 Animal Classification Sorting Worksheet

Student Task

• Use as the main independent-practice activity after the Vocabulary Worksheet. Students cross off each animal in the word bank as they place it, which helps them keep track of the 18 items. Review as a class using the answer key, spending extra time on Bat (a flying mammal) and Kangaroo (a mammal that carries its baby in a pouch) since these are the two animals most likely to be sorted incorrectly. The Bonus section works well as an early-finisher extension or as a whole-class share-out once the main sort is reviewed.

Classroom Use

• Turn the main sort into a movement activity: post the six group names around the room, read each of the 18 animal names aloud one at a time, and have students physically walk to the correct sign. Discuss any disagreement as a class before revealing the answer. For the Bonus section, go around the room collecting one new animal per group out loud to build a class list of 12+ examples beyond the original word bank.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a reduced word bank of 12 animals (drop the two trickiest — Bat and Kangaroo) and allow reference to the Vocabulary Worksheet's Part A while sorting. For the Bonus, allow one animal per pair of groups instead of all six.
ON-LEVEL: Completes all 18 animals independently using only recalled traits, then the Bonus section for all six groups.
CHALLENGE: After finishing, students add one more real-world animal of their own choosing to each of the six groups in the Bonus section, plus a second animal for any two groups of their choice.

Answer Key & Assessment

Score the main sort out of 18 (one point per correctly placed animal) — see the answer key's scoring summary table. Treat the Bonus section and the "Think About It" reflection as a qualitative check of reasoning, not a right/wrong score; use the Grade 2 Animals Unit Grading Rubric if a formal score is needed.

Teacher Tips

Do not let students sort by "where it lives" as a shortcut — that's exactly the misconception Bat and Kangaroo are designed to catch. If several students get Bat wrong, it's worth re-showing the Mammals slide from the Introduction PowerPoint before moving further into the topic. In the Bonus section, watch for students reusing an animal already in the word bank — that's a sign they're still relying on recognition rather than recall.
